Message from Our Principal

Dear Families of PS 163:

Welcome to our school’s PTA website where you will find information regarding your child’s school year. If you are a prospective parent, I do encourage you to visit our wonderful school.

Our school’s vision is to “Nurture and support the opinions and ideas of our students.” Children learn best when they engage in meaningful activities, are allowed to share their thinking out loud, and work collaboratively with others. As a Learning Partners Program host school, we have implemented structures such as open discussion to provide our students with opportunities to engage in rich and meaningful conversations across all subject areas. In 2015, PS 163 applied to the
Learning Partners Program, which promotes interschool collaborative learning. For the past two years we have been a partner school, learning from a host school that exhibits strong practices and working with other partner schools to strengthen our own practices. For the 2017-2018 school year, the NYC DOE has promoted PS 163 to Learning Partners Program Host School. We are now in a place where other schools will join us to learn about the strong teaching practices taking place at our school. Our staff at 163 is experienced and continuously developing their instructional expertise.

We believe in partnering with our parents to meet the needs of your child. You are welcome to join us for many activities throughout the year including publishing party celebrations where students share their work, Tuesday parent engagement time (2:40 – 3:20 p.m.), and so much more! Throughout the school year, our families work together with the school to run school-wide events such as: Dia de Los Muertos, Fall Feast Celebrations, Noche de Amor, and more. Funds from all school-wide events support programs including chess, the National Dance Institute (NDI) and Young Audiences of New York. Our monthly PTA meetings alternate with day and night meetings to accommodate all families and to encourage your participation.

Work with our community based organizations has grown over the years. We are proud to be able to bring into the school additional resources that support the arts, sports, student teaching, and volunteer experience. We were recently informed that the Film Society Lincoln Center program for all 3rd and 4th graders will be funded in the fall thanks to the Gary Winick Foundation. Film Society allows our youth to experience the film industry at an early age. Students work on semester long projects highlighting their creativity and hidden talents. Finally, Green Beetz – Grow NYC will return to work with all of our 5th graders for the upcoming school year. This program allows our 5th graders to learn about the importance of healthy food options. Congratulations to all members of our wonderful school community for these achievements! Listed below are additional organizations that partner with PS 163:

  • LEAP Afterschool
  • Jewish Community Center (JCC)
  • Max Scholar
  • NYRR Mighty Milers
  • Trinity Grace Church
  • Landmark West
  • Lincoln Center Film Society
  • Green Beetz, Grow NYC
  • NY Historical Society
  • NY Cares
  • Bank Street College
  • Teachers College
  • Fordham University
  • New York University
  • Columbia University

In addition to our strong arts and extracurricular activities, we have been very focused on aligning our curriculum to meet the rigors of the common core learning standards. I am pleased to inform you that for the third year in a row, PS 163 has been identified as a Reward School by NYS Commissioner, Mary Ellen Elia. While test scores are only a partial indicator of success, the scores of PS 163 students on statewide tests demonstrate the commitment we have to our strong core program.

Whether you are a current, new, or prospective parent, I look forward to welcoming you in our building to see our initiatives in action. Please visit us for our exciting events or for a school tour if you are considering joining our community. Join us at 163 to feel the nurturing environment we have created.

Best,

Donny Lopez
